| Twin Oaks Farms Today's Polygon $10,000 Speed Derby was won by a local rider who is no stranger to the winner's circle. Mark Laskin of Langley, a former Canadian Equestrian Team member and Olympic rider, was the last to go of 28 riders. His experience, and that of his horse, Future Folly, a former mount of Ian Millar's, came through as they negotiated the derby course almost five seconds faster their closest rider. Also competing was the legendary Irish derby rider Eddie Macken who rode early in the class and took the lead with a fast, clear round aboard Fiona. Macken's appearance in the derby was a delight for the crowd, many of whom had been looking forward to seeing the most successful derby rider make an appearance at the local facility. Macken ended up with the eighth place ribbon. The inaugural Twin Oaks Derby continued today with the 130 horses and riders enjoying the courses set by course designer Peter Holmes of Victoria. Holmes said he is honoured to be the first course designer to work at Twin Oaks, and had high praise for the facility. "Spectacular,"was his description, saying the facility has potential and quality of arena. More and more spectators are discovering the excitement of top level show jumping the facility in Richmond. Anne Russell, who is visiting here from Cheshire, England, was most impressed with the facility. "It looks really nice and professional," said Russell, whose daughter Sarah Davies is competing at the show. Russell, whose family has been involved in equestrian for many years and is familiar with the top British derby site of Hickstead commented, "This is so spacious and calm."
